When reflecting on the idea of “ietsism”, I realized that my experience regarding belief has largely been shaped by my Christian upbringing. Throughout the years, my relationship with belief keeps transforming, but as I find new meanings within doubt a single line from the Catholic Mass always stays relevant and captivates me: “Say only a Word and my soul shall be healed”. The idea that a single word can embody something so whole is incredibly moving. Thinking of ways to translate this idea of oneness, whether that be a word, a gesture, a moment in time, or other means of being, was a strong aspect of exploration when creating this piece. The personification of a word in itself can be enough to become a point of departure. In the beginning was the Word and the Word became, and the Word dwelt among us.Commissioned by St. Frank van der Wal Fonds
